Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS)

The premier advanced resuscitation program designed for healthcare providers to improve outcomes for pediatric patients experiencing respiratory emergencies, shock and cardiopulmonary arrest.

What makes our PALS program ideal for your professional needs?…

You will be able to practise and train in dynamic role-playing situations that mirror real life and that will help you in your role as a healthcare provider. You will be introduced to a wide range of life-threatening, all-hands-on-deck scenarios involving pediatric patients experiencing respiratory emergencies, shock and cardiopulmonary arrest in which you apply a systematic approach that includes the evaluate-identify-intervene sequence. The goal is to strengthen your ability to recognize, intervene, communicate and work effectively as a critical member of a healthcare team.

Heart & Stroke’s PALS program, based on the 2020 Guidelines, provides hands-on learning that builds on your Basic Life Support (BLS) skills, teaches you when and how to use the latest treatment recommendations for your patients, and takes your skills as an advanced healthcare provider to the next level.

Take Precourse Self-Assessment

Required for PALS Provider and PALS Provider Renewal courses

Heart & Stroke’s online Precourse Self-Assessment will help you to evaluate your readiness for the PALS Provider and the PALS Provider Renewal courses. It covers rhythm recognition, pharmacology and the application of knowledge to practical scenarios.

We strongly encourage you to prepare by buying and reviewing the Pediatric Advanced Life Support Provider Manual, and reviewing the resources found under the PALS student Resources tab.

The Precourse Self-Assessment is free, takes 30 to 45 minutes to complete, and a passing score is 70%. You can take it as many times as needed.

Once you’ve achieved a passing score, you will receive your PALS Precourse Self-Assessment Certificate, which you must present to your instructor when you arrive at the course. The certificate is valid for 90 days.

What is NEW and IMRPOVED about this program?

TEAMWORK, TEAMWORK, TEAMWORK

You’ll no longer be tested individually on your ability to lead a team, especially since many of you might never assume that position in your real-life healthcare role. You and other members of your team will pass – or fail – based on your team’s performance. The reason for the change is that, in a real-life situation, patient outcomes depend largely upon the performance of the entire team, not just one individual.

What can you expect to learn from our PALS program?

  • High-Quality CPR (applying Basic Life Support skills to case scenarios)
  • Airway Management
  • Systems of Care
  • Science of Resuscitation
  • Systematic Approach
  • CPR coach
  • Signs of Clinical Deterioration
  • Acute Coronary Syndrome

BLS Blended (online + in-class)

The course for health professionals and first responders. Ideal for individuals wanting a more comprehensive and paced offering and those who are new to BLS or do not frequently need to engage in life-saving measures.

Blended learning combines the strengths of online learning and in-classroom training. Among its many qualities, BLS Blended provides a convenient, flexible and robust option for busy health professionals and emergency responders. This option is particularly feasible when balancing the demands of working and learning are critical, such as during a global pandemic!

Powered using a new, user-friendly online learning platform, BLS Blended teaches the same curriculum and hones the same skills as our traditional, instructor-led course – but on average, it takes less time to complete. A Blended course is divided into two parts:

Part 1: Online: a self-paced, cognitive learning and assessment program with easy access to a rich array of resources, activities, learning videos, knowledge checks and an electronic exam. Once you have completed the first part of the program you will move on to the in-person portion.

Part 2: In-class: an instructor-led, classroom-based session where you will benefit from ample opportunity for hands-on skills practice, expert coaching, debriefing, team scenarios and comprehensive skills testing.
